Urban History
General Overview of Urban History
Urban history is a dynamic and interdisciplinary scholarly discipline concerned with the study of cities and urban processes through time. It investigates the emergence, development, transformation, and the social, economic, political, cultural, and physical life of cities, from the earliest urban settlements to contemporary metropolises. As such, urban history does not view cities merely as static physical entities, but as complex, changeable organisms that are simultaneously both the stage and the actor of historical events.
The subject of urban history is exceptionally broad. It encompasses the physical development of the city, social structure and dynamics, the economic life of the city, political organisation and governance, and cultural life and identity.
Urban history is based on diverse sources, including written documents (city statutes, chronicles, court records, tax books, letters, diaries), cartographic sources (city plans, maps), visual sources (paintings, photographs, films), archaeological finds, architectural remains, and, for more recent periods, oral history.
Urban History in Croatian Historiography
Croatia, with its rich and layered urban tradition extending from ancient cities on the coast, through medieval communes and free royal cities, to industrial and post-socialist urban transformations, offers exceptionally fertile ground for research in the domain of urban history.
In Croatian historiography, the study of urban history has largely taken place within the frameworks of local history, art history, and the history of archaeology. Although the research focus of Croatian urban historiography has been strongly directed towards the area of Dalmatia and the coastal regions, in more recent times significant advances have been made in the direction of researching urban centres in continental Croatia, thereby creating the prerequisites for a comprehensive understanding of the issues of urban history in Croatia.
Despite significant progress, Croatian urban historiography also faces certain challenges. There is an evident need for a greater number of synthetic and comparative studies that would approach the issues of Croatian urban history outside the usual thematic and methodological frameworks.
